SAES student research alights at LSAMP

Dr. Radiah MinorDr. Jenora WatermanA&T hosted the 2012 North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance For Minority Participation (NC-LSAMP) Research Conference in late September, and the competition for university students with posters detailing their research projects drew 74 entries from across the state (East Carolina, Fayetteville State, N.C. Central, Pembroke and UNCC) around the Triad (Winston-Salem State and Wake Forest, in addition to A&T) and from so far afield as the University of South Florida. The SAES was well represented, with 14 student presentations. Dr. Radiah Minor was the research faculty advisor for six of the presentations, and a colleague from the Dept. of Animal Sciences, Dr. Jenora Waterman, was a close second with five student protÄgÄs submitting posters that were accepted for presentation at NC-LSAMP. Dr. Paula Faulkner of the Department of Agribusiness, Applied Economics and Agriscience Education, had Dr. Paula FaulknerDr. Manuel Reyesone student for whom she was the sole mentor of a poster presentation, and another student's research was mentored jointly by Faulkner and a member of the faculty at Penn. State. Dr. Manuel Reyes was the faculty mentor for a Biological Engineering student's research presentation.

One of the animal sciences majors mentored by Waterman, Sara Tatum, was awarded first place in one of the five NC-LSAMP competition categories. Tatum's research into "Biocompatibility of Magnesium-based biomaterials for Stent Applications" took the top honors in among the Life Sciences entries.
